Help & Docs
Everything about recording greetings, targeting pages, installing the widget, analytics, and billing.
Getting started
Floating Video puts a small, friendly video βbubbleβ on your website. You add a short greeting β record it with your webcam or upload a clip you already have β decide how it looks and which pages it shows on, then paste one line of code into your site. That's it.
The flow is four steps: add a video (record or upload) β wrap it in a greeting β add page rules β install the snippet. Each is covered below.
Adding a video
Open Record from the top navigation and you'll be offered two ways to get a video in:
- Record with your camera β film a fresh greeting with your webcam, right in the browser.
- Upload a video β use an MP4 or MOV clip you already have.
Either way the video can be up to 30 seconds long. A few seconds is ideal β a quick βHi, welcome!β outperforms a long pitch.
Recording with your camera
Your browser will ask for camera and microphone permission. A countdown shows the time remaining and recording stops automatically at zero.
Uploading an existing video
Choose Upload a video, then drag in (or pick) an MP4 or MOV file. Anything longer than 30 seconds is rejected β trim it first in your own editor.
Keep your subject centred. The bubble is a circle or a square, so we crop the middle square of your video and discard the rest. This matters most for portrait (vertical) clips: anything near the top or bottom β including your head, if you're framed high β will be cut off. When you pick a file, the upload screen previews it with a square guide showing exactly what visitors will see, so you can check the framing before you commit.
Trimming
After recording you can drag the start/end handles on the timeline to trim dead air before saving.
Background blur
Toggle Blur background to keep the focus on you. It runs on-device while you record, so give it a couple of seconds to load β the preview may go dark briefly before the blur kicks in.
Desktop only. Background blur isn't available on phones or tablets β the effect is too heavy for most mobile devices and can freeze the preview, so we hide the toggle there. To record with blur, use a laptop or desktop.
What happens on save
Your recording is processed into web-optimized formats and stored. When it finishes you're taken to the next step automatically.
Creating a greeting
A greeting is a video plus how and where it appears. Right after your first recording you'll be prompted to create one.
New video, returning user
If you already have greetings, saving a new video gives you two choices: create a new greeting with it, or attach it to an existing greeting (keeping that greeting's pages and settings β handy for swapping in a fresh recording).
Enable / disable
Toggle a greeting off to instantly stop it showing anywhere, without deleting it.
Shapes, positions & sizes
Shape (mask)
- Circle β a round bubble, the classic look.
- Square β a rounded square.
- Story β a tall 9:16 card, like a social story.
Position
Pin the bubble to the bottom-right (default), bottom-left, or top-center of the visitor's screen.
Size
Three presets: S, M, and L. Try the interactive demo on the home page to see each combination live.
Call to action
Give your greeting a next step. Add an optional call-to-action button that appears inside the bubble near the end of the video β and stays once the greeting finishes β so a visitor who just watched your hello can act on it: book a call, reply, shop, or anything you like.
Adding one
On the greeting editor, fill in the Button text and Button link under βCall to actionβ. Leave the text blank for no button. Tap a suggestion chip (Book a call, Reply, Chat nowβ¦) to fill the text instantly.
Keep it tiny
The button lives inside a small bubble, so keep the label to 2β3 words (max 20 characters). The link must start with http:// or https:// and opens in a new tab.
Tracking clicks
Every tap is recorded as a Clicked event, so you can see your click-through rate right next to displays and views (see Analytics).
Display rules
Rules decide which pages a greeting appears on. Add one or more per greeting. A page is matched against its URL and its path.
- Exact β matches one specific URL, e.g.
https://site.com/pricingor just/pricing. Use/to target the homepage. - Prefix β matches anything that starts with the pattern, e.g.
/blogmatches/blog,/blog/post-1, etc. - Wildcard β glob matching with
*, e.g./docs/*.
When several rules match
The most specific rule wins: exact beats prefix beats wildcard, and longer patterns beat shorter ones. Trailing slashes are ignored, so /pricing and /pricing/ are treated the same.
When to show
Rules decide which pages a greeting appears on; the When to show settings decide when it appears on those pages, so it lands at the right moment instead of on every load.
Trigger
- On page load β appears as soon as the page opens (the default).
- After scrolling β waits until the visitor scrolls a little way down the page.
- On exit intent β appears when the visitor moves to leave (on touch devices it falls back to a short timer).
Delay
Add a delay (in seconds) before the bubble shows β handy for letting a visitor settle in first.
Frequency cap
Show again after N days stops the bubble reappearing for the same visitor for a while after they've seen or closed it. Set 0 to show on every page load. This is remembered in the visitor's browser.
Installing the snippet
Copy your snippet from the dashboard and paste it once into the <head> of your site. It looks like:
<script src="https://www.floatingvideo.com/static/widget/loader.js?id=YOUR_KEY" defer></script>
The ?id= is your account's embed key β it tells the widget which account's greetings to show. Paste it as-is; you never need to edit it.
Works on any platform
Anywhere you can add an HTML snippet β Webflow, WordPress, Shopify, Framer, plain HTML β the widget works. It loads asynchronously and won't slow your page.
Propagation
The loader is cached for a few minutes, so changes to the snippet itself can take up to ~5 minutes to appear. Changes to greetings and rules take effect right away.
Content Security Policy
If your site sets a Content Security Policy (CSP), you may need to adapt it to allow the widget to load β otherwise the browser will block the snippet and the bubble won't appear. Most sites don't have a CSP and need to do nothing. If yours does, open your browser's JavaScript console (right-click β Inspect β Console) on the page where the widget should show: any blocked request is logged there with the exact directive and domain (www.floatingvideo.com) you need to allow.
Analytics
Your dashboard shows the full funnel over time and per page:
- Displayed β the bubble appeared on a page.
- Viewed β a visitor actually played the greeting (unmuted and watched past a short threshold). Muted autoplay never counts as a view.
- Clicked β a visitor tapped your call-to-action button. The dashboard also shows your click-through rate (clicks as a share of views).
Filter by video and by period (today, yesterday, 7/30 days, all time), and see a breakdown of which pages drove displays, views, and clicks.
Email updates
We send a few helpful emails so you don't have to keep checking the dashboard:
- First view β a one-time nudge the first time someone watches one of your greetings.
- Running low β a heads-up as your free views approach the limit, so your bubble never goes dark unexpectedly.
- Weekly recap β a short summary of your displays, views, and clicks over the last 7 days.
These go to your account email. There's nothing to configure.
Plans & billing
Free
Every account starts free with a set number of greeting views. Once you hit the limit the bubble stops serving and your dashboard shows an upgrade prompt β nothing is deleted.
Pro β $99/year + tax
Pro removes the view limit (subject to fair use). Tax/VAT is calculated at checkout based on your location, and payments are handled by Paddle, our Merchant of Record, who issue your invoice.
Upgrading
Click Upgrade on your dashboard, complete checkout, and your account switches to Pro immediately. Subscriptions renew yearly and can be cancelled anytime; see the Terms for the refund policy.
Account & sign-in
Sign-in is passwordless. Enter your email and we send a one-time magic link; clicking it signs you in for 24 hours. There's nothing to remember and no password to leak.
Signing in with a new email automatically creates your account. Each account is fully isolated β you only ever see your own videos, greetings, and stats.
Troubleshooting
The bubble isn't showing
- Check the greeting is enabled and its video status is ready.
- Confirm a rule matches the page you're viewing. For the homepage, use an exact
/or a prefix on your domain. - Remember www vs non-www: an exact rule for
https://www.site.com/won't matchhttps://site.com/. Use a prefix or add both. - If you just changed the snippet, give it up to ~5 minutes (loader cache).
- Free accounts that hit the view limit stop serving until upgrade.
- Check your browser's JavaScript console for blocked requests β if your site has a Content Security Policy, it may need adapting to allow the widget. The console shows exactly what to allow.
Sound doesn't play automatically
Browsers block autoplay with sound. The bubble autoplays muted and the visitor taps once to hear it β this is expected and unavoidable across the web.
